The San Pedro Youth Cadet Corps Program has been in full swing for about three months now and the 20+ children that have enrolled in the program are thoroughly enjoying themselves with events and exercises that are being prepared for them.
After being dormant for almost four years, it was a collaborative initiative between the San Pedro Neighborhood Watch Committee and the San Pedro Police Department that the program was revived in San Pedro Town. With strong assistance from Freddie Gonzalez, foreman of the San Pedro Town Council and local businessman Shane McCann, Police Constable (PC) Juan Chuc has been able to organize a fun-fill cadet program for the children involved.
Just this past week the young cadets were hosted by the San Pedro Branch of the Belize Coast where they learned the ins and outs of their operation on the island. They visited the Coast Guard outpost and were giving a great ride on board one of their speed patrol boats. They were also treated by My Secret Deli to a delicious luncheon.
It is with the assistance of the business community and organizations that the Youth Cadets are able to enjoy learning opportunities such as this one. The cadets meet once a week and are taught a variety of skills and techniques that include foot drills, team work exercises, participate in sporting events and partake in life skills lessons. It is once a month that PC Chuc organizes special outings for the cadets to enjoy and learn more about their community.
Anybody interested in having their children join the Cadet Corps or assist the program by inviting the group to a special outing, can contact PC Juan Chuc at 607-9033, Freddie Gonzalez at 604-0949 or Shane McCann at 631-8366.
