San Pedro Police are investigating the death of one of their own. At about 2:00 a.m. this morning police officer identified as Corporal Alfonso Guy was found in his room in the police barracks in the San Juan area with gunshot wounds to the back of his head and his abdomen. According to reports Cpl. Guy was taken for medical treatment at the Dr. Otto Polyclinic and was then airlifted to Belize City for further medical treatment. Cpl. Guy  later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

Mayor Daniel Guerrero and the newly appointed Liquor Licensing Board had an open discussion with the "Open" bars of San Pedro Town on Thursday, January 3, 2019, where they discussed issues concerning noise pollution and how they can work together with the Town Council and authorities to minimize this problem. The new Liquor Licensing Board consists of: Mr. Eiden Salazar whom is the Chairman, Ms. Vanessa Parham, Mr. Joe Elijio, Mayor Daniel Guerrero.

After video footage of excessive force by police Quick Response Team on civilians hit social media and news outlets, island residents and Belizeans have expressed their outrage on the situation. The Belize Police Department has launched an internal investigation and both PC No. 1919 Samir Medina and PC No.2287 Tyrell Rowley have been placed on seven days suspension pending the findings of a criminal and internal police investigation.

Bringing in the New Year is supposed to be a festive and joyous time for all to celebrate, sadly we get to report on a case of excessive force by police. A disturbing video footage was circulating on social media of what appears to be members of the Quick Response Team (QRT) beating down on a couple underage males outside a local bar establishment in the Boca Del Río Area, San Pedro Town.

According to the website Hotel Management the resort hotel brand Margaritaville is developing a new property on Ambergris Caye. Our sources indicate that this new deveolpment will take place at the old Sueno del Mar property located about 12 miles in North Ambergris Caye; the development had been foreclosed by Belize Bank.

During the month of December, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) and its employees contributed to several initiatives for the benefit of deserving families and the elderly countrywide. The 20th Annual Christmas Hamper Drive culminated on Friday, December 21 when BEL staff distributed hampers to 90 families and 60 senior citizens. Through yearlong donations from employees and the Company, the hampers valued at approximately $300 each were prepared with ingredients for a traditional Christmas dinner, groceries and toiletries.

On Wednesday, 19 December 2018, Cubola Publishers along with professional photographer, Tony Rath and NICH, held an official book launch of “Images of Ambergris Caye” Photo Book by Tony Rath at Parham Plaza Hotel on San Pedro Ambergris Caye. The Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve (TAMR) has sustained multiple damages and is threatened by harmful and improperly unregulated development activities, according to a new Turneffe Atoll Trust (TAT) report.  The TAMR provides vital goods and services to people and the environment but is at risk from unsustainable activities. Thousands of Belizeans benefit from the current stream of ecosystem services of the TAMR and they stand to lose the most from the degradation of this important marine resource.

The Ministry of Health in partnership with the Belize Agriculture Health Authority (BAHA) and the Belize Bureau of Standards has been advised on a recall announcement from Del Monte Food Inc. of Fiesta Corn Seasoned with Red and Green Peppers. Although Del Monte Foods Inc. has not been notified of any reports of illness associated with the product, 62, 242 cases of this product carrying a specific code and date are being recalled due to under-processing which could lead to life-threatening illness if consumed.

The Nutcracker came to life at The Island Academy’s annual Christmas Pageant that took place on Wednesday, December 13, 2018, at the school compound. The main character Marie was whisked away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls. An evil Mouse King was defeated; magical characters came to life; dances were performed and sung as the student body put on a spectacular show once again.
