UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Priyanka Chopra has teamed up with a footwear brand Crocs to collaborate in a donation campaign. She will give 50,000 pairs of classic clogs to school children in Belize. The actress took to Twitter to announce the good news. She also posted a video with the caption that read: “This initiative is very special to me. What started as a conversation with @Crocs of shared interests and concerns for the children of the world, has blossomed into this amazing association with @UNICEF, an organization that is so close to my heart.”

[Press Release, Belize City, Belize, 11 December 2019] For two decades, many Belizean fishers have been calling for a ban on gillnets. Over the past 18 months, following a number of meetings with Government officials and licensed gill-netters, a coalition of NGOs, including commercial fishermen, sports fishers, game fishers, and tourism and conservation organizations, drafted a comprehensive proposal to transition those 83 fishers who have a gillnet license away from the gear.

On Tuesday, November 19, 2019, the Hol Chan Reserve Enforcement team, led by operations Manager, Shalini Cawich, embarked on a strategic patrol within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. In the vicinity of Tres Cocos Channel, the patrol team encountered a fishing vessel with two fishers in the water. Due diligence was done, and the vessel was searched which led to the discovery of parrot fish, fish fillet without skin patch, lobster with spawn and undersized lobster. The fishers, Giovanni Reyes and Jose Marroquin were arrested and successfully prosecuted in the San Pedro Magistrate court.

The San Pedro Fire Department can now boast the second largest fleet of fire trucks in the country as a donation of twin trucks boosted its fleet to four fire trucks. The donation took place today, Thursday, December 12, 2019, at the San Pedro Fire Station where Hon. Edmund Castro, Hon. Manuel Heredia and Mayor Daniel Guerrero officially accepted the donation from Casa de la Caye Villas.
