After news broke about the new underwater project in the Mexico Rocks Area known as Sea Trek, the project has raised more than eyebrows as a group in the community has expressed their concerns of the potential harmful effects to the reef. But the developer of the project, David Gegg, says that he has followed proper procedures to ensure that his new tourist attraction is environmentally safe. An Environmental Compliance Plan (ECP) has been signed by Chief Environmental Officer, Martin Alegria with Gegg, giving the project the green light.

Reports reached our office on Monday, May 10, about a boat that had sunk at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Upon making checks with both the Hol Chan Marine Reserve Office and the San Pedro Police Station, we were confirmed that a boat had run aground the reef.

Saturday, May 8, 2010 was a night dedicated to all the beautiful mothers on La Isla Bonita. San Pedro selected and honored Mrs. Leonor Trejo as Mother of the Year 2010. Mrs. Leonor Trejo (67 years old) is happily married to Mr. Ariel Trejo and she is the proud mother of four children: Diana Nuñez, Adi Martinez, Hector Trejo and Griselda Coba. She has 15 Grandchildren. Mrs. Trejo is a proud Sanpedrana and well known for being a part of the church choir at the Roman Catholic Church and her volunteer work with fundraisers for the community.

Residents of La Isla Cariñosa – Caye Caulker Village are upset with the resent incident that occurred on Sunday, May 9, where a police officer shot and killed 31-year-old Alex Goff a Belize City resident. According to reports Goff was at Caye Caulker spending time with childhood friends and on Sunday, May 9 Goff along with Kareem Owen were at the Lazy Lizard Beach Bar & Grill near the split when Goff started behaving disorderly.

Reef Week was celebrated from April 24 to 30 under the theme “Save the Reef Today; Tomorrow Might be Too Late”. Activities started on Saturday, April 24, with the annual Lagoon Reef Eco Challenge while other activities included the Hol Chan Open Day at the Hol Chan office, where students were taught about Hol Chan and the ecosystems it protects.

The Government of Mexico has implemented new rules for foreigners visiting Mexican territory, in order to eliminate requirements and simplify proceedings. These new rules are being applied at all Mexican borders. But Belize City media is reporting that over the weekend many Belizeans were surprised by a new process that caused hours of delays and long lines.

- Press Release - Central America is one step closer to having more pediatric healthcare closer to home after the groundbreaking on May 4 of the first Sanford Children’s international clinic. The clinic in Belize City, Belize will open by the summer of 2011. It will provide pediatric care to the growing population and be designed in a castle theme similar to other Sanford Children’s facilities. Belize population is about 320,000 with 160,000 of them children.

The San Pedro Town Council organized a march against crime on Friday, April 30, which gathered residents to show their stance against crime on the island. "Silence the Violence" is the message that Mayor Paz wanted to send out as she strengthened her stance of communication with all the neighborhood watch groups on the island.

This school year the business department of San Pedro High School took a different approach towards the students’ learning process by organizing the first mini business fair. The purpose of the fair was to showcase products and business plans that the students had developed, researched, marketed and executed as business students. The objective of the fair was to enhance the students’ knowledge of the business world, especially for the seniors who are close to graduation and may become young entrepreneurs.

 “Ranza Boys” – Reef Radio Team takes 1st place. It was an impressive start of the Lagoon Reef Eco Challenge 2010 as 35 teams entered this year’s race, now in its sixth year. The kick off was at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 24 and the final leg of the race ended at Central Park the next day Sunday, April 25. It was an amateur and junior race this year and taking the top prize was Reef Radio’s Ranza Boys for the amateur division.

Natalie Arceo had every resident of San Pedro glued to their TV set this past Tuesday night, April 27, as she made her final presentations at Channel 5’s KTV Latino Competition. It was the best show ever as each performance was great and had everybody on their toes. At the end of the night Natalie Arceo came in second with Ismael Chacon winning first place. Caye Caulker "Not a Lot of Hoop or Hoopla but Still and Always a Lot of Fun" is a new book that captures a collection of words and images on how the authors felt. Year after year the San Pedro High School holds its Miss San Pedro High Pageant as fundraiser event and it is always a highly anticipated show especially for the high school students as several young ladies take center stage and vie for the coveted title of Miss SPHS and be a role model for the rest of the student body. And this year there was no exception as seven beautiful young ladies, Xenika Armstrong, Porsha Belisle, Jaleni Lawrence, Miriam Palacio, Trisha Acosta, Briceydi Venagas and Fatima Graniel delighted the crowd at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium on Saturday, April 17.

The San Pedro AIDS Commission is a very active group on the island that does its best to educate and prevent this epidemic. As part of its ongoing campaigns the SP AIDS Commission held free HIV testing on Sunday, April 18, at the Central Park. Knowing your status is important and the encouragement of practicing safe sex is vital these days so as to help prevent the spread of this epidemic. A total of 59 persons got tested; one of the best turn outs that the SP AIDS Commission has ever seen.

The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) is preparing over 750 enumerators countrywide for its 2010 Population & Housing Census for Belize. Over 40 enumerators are taking a two-week training here on the island and on May 12, 2010 these enumerators will be visiting your home under the theme “It’s 2010…Let’s count again!”.
