Broccoli and cauliflower are among commodities that can only be produced economically within Belize for a limited period every year. The average weekly market demand for cauliflower is 8,000 lbs. and 6,000 lbs. for broccoli. To meet local market demand, a total of 10 acres were planted of each commodity following a calendared planting schedule.
San Pedro Police are investigating the murder of a male person that was found lying motionless on Blake Street in the San Pablo Area on Wednesday, March 13, 2019. Acting on information received at about 11:00pm police visited the San Pablo Area where they observed the lifeless body of a male creole descent person lying on the side of the street face down motionless dressed in a grey t shirt and a red and grey 3/4 pants with multiple stab wound to the right side of chest and left side of his neck.

The Ministry of Finance announces that at midnight on March 13, 2019, the pump price for regular gasoline increased by 60 cents from $9.61 to $10.21 per gallon, while the pump price for premium gasoline also increased by 59 cents from $10.31 to $10.90 per gallon. These price increases are due to a reduction in supply from the OPEC countries combined with an increase in demand in North America and in the Far East. The Government of Belize is working closely with the fuel industry to ensure that prices remain as low as possible.

Carnaval 2019 ended with a bang as the two comparsas group gave it their all and danced their hearts out! Dona Flora's Group theme was "Colorful Carnaval" and they wore brightly colored costumes and head pieces and were in full carnival spirit! The Barbies without fail shook what their momma gave them. Youths from Prevail Combat Club win exhibition MMA Matches in Chetumal Two young Belizeans from the youth MMA program at Prevail Combat Club participated and won Exhibition MMA matches in Chetumal, Q. Roo, on Saturday, Mar 2, 2019. The event was labeled as the 1st Annual Contact Sports Festival. In the First Match Jared Ramos, 15 defeated Jonathan Hernandez, 17 years old training with PEP Chetumal. In the 2nd Match Trenton "K-City" Hulse 13 years old, defeated Johan Rivero, 15 years old also from PEP chetumal. Congratulations to Jonathan and Trenton!
Carnaval Day Two saw two comparsas the ever popular Barbies (Men's Group) and Dona Floras Group.
The Veterinary Association of Belize advises the general public that veterinary clinics in Belize, particularly in Belize City, are reporting an increase in outbreaks of Canine Distemper. This disease of puppies and dogs is often fatal and those that survive have permanent, irreparable nervous system damage. All dogs are at risk but puppies younger than four months old and dogs that have not been vaccinated against the disease are at increased risk of acquiring the disease. Puppies and dogs often become infected through airborne exposure.
Only one comparsa (street dancing group) graced the streets of downtown San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize on the first day of the island's cultural celebration of Carnaval. Does this signal the start of a dying tradition? Many are afraid that it just might be, as the number of comparsas during the festivitiesl have dropped significantly throughout the years. Only a couple groups are holding on tight to the age-old tradition, not wanting to see it die out completely.
A cooperation agreement was signed on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Public Health, Republic of Cuba. The agreement signed was towards agreeing on terms of the medical brigade program to continue in the strengthening and development of the health system in Belize.
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) hosted a ceremony on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 to honor some of the 2019 beneficiaries of its Golden Citizen Program. The Company is providing 2,665 Golden Citizens countrywide with a credit of up to 60 kilowatt hours on their monthly electricity bills. Annual awardees are selected randomly from among Belizeans age 65 or older with an active electricity account registered in their name at their residence. Waivers of fees for other services are also granted.
The Hol Chan Marine Reserve is all about taking care of the marine life at the Hol Chan Channel and has been working ardously in looking for ways to have the reserve under proper monitor for 24-hours. With this in mind they permanently installed a pontoon boat as a Ranger Station at the Hol Chan Channel on Tuesday, February 26, 2019.
