We Angels are always pictured as fun and adventurous girls looking for something new and exciting to do, but at times we are just looking to enjoy delicious food in a comfortable setting while enjoying girl talk. And well this week we found the perfect place to have our girl talk and be treated to Five Star dining at one of the most elegant restaurants on the island – Red Ginger.
Located at the Phoenix Resort, Red Ginger boasts a luxurious dining experience that complements the posh surroundings of the resort. But the restaurant is not about catering only to its guests and an exclusive clientele. Red Ginger invites island residents to come experience the combination of dishes popular across the Americas & the Caribbean, which include innovative versions of more familiar recipes together with less known regional cuisine.
Guests are delighted to find familiar local dishes in the menu, but each has been altered and infused with complementary flavors to give that uniqueness which will definitely have people coming back for more.
Upon our arrival we were greeted by one of our waiters of the night – Aaron, but instead of having a seat we wasted no time on helping our good friend Amalio “Tua” in preparing some drinks. You have to try the Citrus Paradise, Frozen Mojito, Pear Margarita and the Caperino. Angel Perlita has gotten quite good at preparing drinks and did most of them herself while Angel Delsie and I only watched her and Tua prepare the drinks.
Our waiters Aaron and Armando brought us our appetizers, Pork Empanadas, Barbecue Wings, Conch Fritters in a chipotle aioli sauce, Shrimp Tostones smothered with a lime chili sauce and a sweet flavored Grouper Ceviche in a mango juice, ginger and cucumber sauce. Quite a mouthful if you tell me! And these were just the starts of the night; but I guess the staff at Red Ginger wanted us to sample the best appetizers on the menu. They were simply divine and after being tantalized with all these appetizers we could not wait to see what was gonna be the main course.
Our bartender never let our glasses run dry! Next thing we knew we had another round of great drinks, a Mudslide, Watermelon Martini, Amigo Freeze and Ginger Rum Punch. For the first time, the Angels were actually being waited on instead of helping out in the kitchen or bar; we were given the royal treatment by the staff of Red Ginger.
For dinner our photographer – Jose Luis Zapata (of Designing Solutions) had a Pan-seared Red Snapper with coconut milk and curry sauce served with ginger rice. I had a vegetarian dish – Penne Pasta with sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts and spinach in a garlic cream sauce drizzled with parmesan cheese. While Angel Perlita savored the flavors of the slow braised grouper with black beans, coconut rice and cilantro beurre blanc sauce, Angel Delsie had a Honey Chipotle glazed beef short ribs served with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. Both were in Heaven.
But wait, we weren’t done yet! The sinfully delicious desserts were next; yes we had enough room for dessert. Luis indulged into the dessert of the month – Fudge Brownie with strawberry ice cream, while Angel Delsie savored the fluffy chocolate mousse. Standing out in presentation was the Key Lime Pie that was set forth for Angel Perlita. The Key Lime filling was neatly set on top of a flat bed of sweet crust. I had the Caribbean Trio of Crème Brulee – three delicious flavors - mango, pineapple and coconut.
The inspiration for the restaurant’s name comes from the tropical red ginger flower that is native to the rainforest of Belize and it adorns the dining area giving it a touch of class. The cozy surroundings, made warm by the rich red walls, spot and rope lighting and candles on the tables and walls, sit around 50 guests in both the main dining area and outdoor patio setting.
The Angels would like to thank Kelly Kanabar and her wonderful staff for an excellent evening. Red Ginger is located at The Phoenix at the end of Front Street and is open seven days a week – Lunch 11:30a.m. to 2:30p.m. and Dinner from 6:00p.m. to 9:30p.m. For reservations call 226-4623 and remember, “If the Angels recommend it ….it’s gotta be Good (in this case GREAT!)"
